Cuando mi hija Olive tenía 7 meses de edad, tomé vacaciones del trabajo en 2022 y comencé a crear un libro para ella llamado "Olive you!"

A pesar de muchas noches sin dormir, estuve hiperenfocado y diseñé el libro más rápido de que normalmente lo hubiera hecho (aunque aún me llevó mucho tiempo). El resultado final fue un libro del que estoy increíblemente orgulloso, pero esta historia no se trata de ese libro.

Ahora en 2023, en medio de la revolución de la inteligencia artificial, me preguntaba si la IA podría ayudarme a crear algo similar a mi libro anterior sin tanto esfuerzo. Mi objetivo era lograr resultados "suficientemente buenos" que no revelaran la asistencia de la IA, ni siquiera al famoso Alan Turing. Para lograr esto, recurrí a Chat GPT para tareas de texto y conocimiento, y Midjourney como mi artista de confianza.

Ni hablar, vamos directo a los “prompts” que usé a ambos servicios, algunos de los resultados preliminares que produjeron y lo que terminé utilizando.

Prompt (Lo escribí en inglés):

Give me a list of toddler faith-based book ideas along with a description of what the book would have. Book should be for parents to read newborns up to 2-year-olds to sleep

¡Elegí el primer prompt! Creí que un "mundo colorido" sería una gran imagen para captar la atención de un recién nacido o un niño de 1 año.

Siguiente Prompt:

Write me 12 pages of the book you gave me in #1 and it should contain 1 - 2 sentences that are short, simple yet understandable. Also, provide me a description of the illustration that should be showing on each page. Make the last page bedtime related

Ahora... en este momento ya he publicado el libro en Amazon, ¡así que no lo revelaré todo aquí! Pero aquí está cómo se veían los resultados de Chat GPT:

...Ya captas la idea, fue genial. Siguiente paso: Midjourney. Tuve que ajustar los criterios para Midjourney, muchas veces dejando de lado lo que ChatGPT proporcionó por completo, pero manteniendo la misma idea en mis propias palabras.

No me gustó este en absoluto. Intentemos de nuevo:

Ahora sí. Un poco mejor.

Hice esto para las 12 páginas. Añadí una buena letra que coincidiera con las imagenes, recorté cada imagen al tamaño que requería el programa KDP de Amazon, hice todas esas cosas aburridas pero necesarias. Diría que todo ese trabajo representó probablemente el 25% de todo el proyecto.

Las imágenes generadas por AI eran impresionantes, pero aún había imperfecciones donde los animales extraños parecían memes o a un Pokémon. Además, algunas imágenes tenían áreas pixeladas o borrosas que hacían que las páginas no fueran consistentes. Quería que el libro tuviera una apariencia intencionalmente elaborada y la consistencia era crucial. A pesar de buscar imágenes con colores y texturas similares, las imperfecciones del AI me hicieron dudar en publicar el libro.

Así que fui a la buena y vieja Photoshop y pasé cada imagen por un filtro muy antiguo de "Oil paint" que nunca pensé que encontraría un uso legítimo para un cliente.

Funcionó de maravilla. Las pinceladas se alinean perfectamente con los ángulos y las líneas de las imágenes originales, dándoles un aspecto auténtico pintado a mano. Además, el efecto de difuminado mezcla la imagen generada original con las pinceladas, creando una obra de arte completamente nueva.

En este punto, ya había comenzado a trabajar en mi próxima idea de libro, y me di cuenta de que elegir un medio artístico que produzca resultados imperfectos de forma natural, como las pinceladas, la acuarela y el dibujo a lápiz, era la clave para crear imágenes de alta calidad que no levantaran sospechas de "ia".

Probé otra idea de libro de Chat GPT y le pedí a Midjourney que me diera un arte de estilo "acuarela", y los resultados fueron verdaderamente sorprendentes. Muchas veces utilicé las imágenes generadas del primer intento. ¡Era tan bueno!

¡Mira esto! ¡Impecable!

Así que ese sería mi truco, mi "enfoque". Esa es la cosa mágica que encontré en este proceso, y te animo a que lo pruebes. Elije un medio de arte con imperfecciones naturales, o agrega el estilo "Van Gogh" a tus prompts. A pesar de que ese estilo es un poco cliché, los muchos trazos darán a tu obra de arte una sensación auténtica y hecha a mano.

¡Eso es todo! Ya he publicado dos libros utilizando esta técnica - God's Colorful World: A Bedtime Story for Little Ones y Little Prayers for Every Day, con impresionantes ilustraciones de acuarela como esta:

To accomplish this, I turned to Chat GPT for text and knowledge-based tasks, and Midjourney as my go-to artist.

I’ll spare more backstory, let's dive into the prompts that I asked both services and some preliminary results that they produced and what I ultimately ended up using.

Prompt:

I went with the first one! I figure a “colorful world” would be great imagery to catch the eye of a newborn or 1-year-old.

Next prompt:

Write me 12 pages of the book you gave me in #1 and it should contain 1 - 2 sentences that are short, simple yet understandable. Also, provide me a description of the illustration that should be showing on each page. Make the last page bedtime related

Now…at the moment I have already published the book on Amazon, so I won’t give it all away here! But here is what the Chat GPT results looked like:

….You get the point! It was great. Next up, Midjourney. I had to tweak the prompts for Midjourney, many times abandoning what ChatGPT provided altogether, but keeping the same idea in my own words.

I did not like this one at all. Let’s try again:

Now we’re getting somewhere.

I did this for all 12 pages. I slapped a good font that matches the vibe, cut each picture to the sizes that Amazon’s KDP program requires me to, did all that boring but necessary stuff. I’d say me doing all that work accounted for probably 25% of this whole project.

The AI-generated images were impressive, but there were still imperfections where weird animals looked like memes or the next Pokémon. Additionally, some images had pixelated or blurry areas that made the pages inconsistent. I wanted the book to have an intentionally crafted look, and consistency was crucial. Despite searching for images with similar colors and textures, the AI's imperfections made me hesitant to publish the book.

So I went to good ol’ photoshop and ran every picture through the super old “oil paint” feature that I could never see myself finding a legitimate use-case for true client deliverables.

It worked wonders. The brush strokes perfectly align with the angles and lines of the original images, giving them an authentic hand-painted look. Plus, the smudging effect blends the original generated image with the strokes, creating a whole new piece of art.

By now, I had already started working on my next book idea, and I realized that choosing an art medium that naturally produces imperfect results, like brush strokes, watercolor, and pencil art, was the key to creating top-notch images that wouldn't raise any "ai" eyebrows.

I tried another book idea from Chat GPT and told Midjourney to give me “Watercolor” style art, and the results were truly, truly, amazing. Many times I’d use the generated images from the first attempt. It was that good!

I mean, just look at this! Flawless.

So that was going to be my trick -my “angle”. That’s the nugget that I mined from this process, and I encourage you to give it a try! Choose an art medium with natural imperfections, or add "Van Gogh style" to your prompts. Despite that style being a bit of a cliché, the many strokes will give your artwork an authentic, handmade feel.
